Abu Sir, Egypt: Where Your Vacation Should Be

Abu Sir, Egypt

If you want to include the historic city of Memphis, find out the details of the Saqqara royal burial sites, or experience the mountainous pyramids at Giza, the Abu SIr site is the perfect destination to include in their itinerary   .  Revered in Egypt due to the people buried in this site, the Old Kingdom pharaohs, nobles and other important fifth dynasty Egyptians, the site plays an important role in Egypt’s history.

What to See?

Abu Sir contains fourteen pyramids , primarily the earlier “step” pyramid style, and is also the place for one of the most important and largest location of papyri in history

If you are interested in the pyramids of Abu Sir, a number of historians and archaeologists pronounce that only eight of them are worth seeing , four that belonged to pharaohs, three of royal women and one that is left unfinished and unmarked.

Sites popularly visited by travelers of Abu Sir  are the Pyramid of Sahure who was the second pharaoh of the fifth dynasty, the Pyramid of Niuserre which is unique due to the fact that Niuserre was only a son of a pharaoh, but he disrupted the causeway leading into his father’s temple in order to build his own, and the Pyramid of Neferikare which is in a ruinous state but still considered an excellent example of the step style of pyramid construction .

How to Get There?

If you want a complete visit to the well-known areas in necropolis, this area is often included in certain itineraries  , that of Saqqara. Because the location is distinctly outside of the normal itineraries many visitors are pleasantly surprised by its lack of crowding and unimpeded access to many of the structures. Some of the pyramids of Abu Sir are open for interior visits, with several having burial chambers still intact.

At present, there are no fixed methods of arriving at the site using public vehicles  , and most visitors arrive by hired car or guide service, or as part of a private tour.
